A Day at Eastern Neck Maryland NWR
This post is another in my series I am calling “A Day at…. Wherever” . Another wildlife refuge managed by our federal government, Eastern Neck is located on a tiny island in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.
The birds here are what I saw there one afternoon in January. Mostly, I saw the following:
- Eagles
- Turkey Vultures (check out the view through their sinuses)
- Black Vultures
- Canada Geese
- Various ducks bobbing in the bay such as Buffleheads and Hooded Mergansers
I would not call Eastern Neck a great place for birding as there are better ones around, but it was a beautiful island with marshes, ponds and great nature walks. For the New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware area, I would still rate Edwin Forsythe NWR NJ the tops, followed by Bombay Hook NWR DE but I thoroughly enjoyed my day there.

Check out the visitors’ center and tell Ted I said “hello”. The center is an old 1932 hunting lodge with its original slate roof still intact. Funded entirely by private donations and has some great displays and information about the island and the history of duck hunting.
